Thunderbird

Norval Morrisseau (1933 - 2007)

Anishnaabe, Ojibway artist known as the Shaman artist, has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and his work is part of many public galleries and private collections. He was the founder of the Woodland School, also known as the Anishnaabe school, and was a mentor for many Aboriginal Artists. He had his first exhibition at the Pollock Gallery in 1962 and all his works were sold. Norval also exhibited in Paris, France and was referred to as the "Picaso of the North". He uses bold line and colour, and his subject matter eludes to the narrative of the Ojibway Elders, and his visions. Morrisseau signs his works on the front “Copper Thunderbird” which are signed in Cree syllabics. He is represented by the Kinsmen Robinson Gallery in Toronto.
